This RedSn0w guide & tutorial will show you how to use RedSn0w to jailbreak your iPhone 2G or iPhone 3G. Note that this step is required to unlock your iPhone 3G using UltraSn0w later on. Also note there is no way to jailbreak or unlock the iPhone 3G S so far.
This guide is for PC users but I assume the steps are very similar on Mac. If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use PwnageTool on Mac OS X (PwnageTool jailbreak tutorial - PwnageTool unlock guide).
1. Before doing anything, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and the latest firmware 3.0 installed on your iPhone.
2. Create a new folder on your desktop. In this folder, download RedSn0w as well as the latest 3.0 firmware for your iPhone from our iPhone downloads page (make sure you pick the right firmware).
3. Unzip and launch RedSn0w.
4. Click “browse” and select the 3.0 firmware you downloaded in a folder in step 2.
5. Once the firmware has been successfully identified, click “next”.
6. Select “install Cydia” and click “next”.
7. Make sure your iPhone is plugged into the computer and that it is off. Click “next”.
8. RedSn0w will then guide you to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Hold down the power button for 2 seconds. Without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds. Without releasing the home button, release the power button but keep holding the home button for 30 seconds.
9. If done correctly, your iPhone should reboot and the jailbreak process should start. This step may take up to 15-20 minutes so be patient.
10. Once this process is over, you will get a message saying that it is “done!”
11. Click the “finish” button and reboot your iPhone. The reboot may take up to 10 minutes so again, be patient.
12. Congratulations, you just jailbroke your iPhone 3.0 with RedSn0w. Cydia should now be on your springboard

Mobileinstallation Patch
This tutorial will guide you to access your phone directory via SSH. Before you start of with you need to make sure that you have the following stuff:
Wifi network
Open SSH and Automatic SSH on iPhone/ iPod (You can download it via Cydia)
WinSCP on your Windows PC
MobileInstallation Patch 2.2.1 for 2.2.1 firmware
Tutorial:
1. Firstly install Open SSH and Automatic SSH on your iPhone if you haven’t. You can do this by going to Cydia and searching for SSH. You’ll get the above apps. Install them.
2. Now start WinSCP and enter the following details:Host/Hostname/IP: Your IP Address (example: 192.168.2.34, you can find yours by going to General settings> Wifi network in your iPhone)
Username: root
Password: alpine
3. Once you enter the above details click on Save and give any name, for instance- ‘My iPhone’
4. Disable Auto lock on your iPhone as it disconnects Wifi. Once done connect to the above setup network.
5. When the connection is established navigate to the folder:“/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework”
6. Backup the MobileInstallation file, just rename it to “MobileInstallation.bak” or copy it to your computer.
7. Copy the MobileInstallation patch file (download link in the beginning of the post) to “/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework”
8. Set the permissions/CMOD of the file to 775. You can do this by right clicking on the file and going to properties.
9. Navigate to “/private/var/mobile/” and Set permissions to the folder “Applications” to 777NOTE: Make sure recursive is checked (it sets all files within the folder to 777)
10. Navigate into the “/private/var/mobile/applications/” folder and create a “Documents” folder. Set the permission to 777.
11. Navigate to the root level and in the “/Applications/” folder create a “Documents” folder. Set permissions to 777.
12. Reboot iPhone/iPod Touch.
13. Now in iTunes log into your account and download a free game/ application. Make sure that you authorize your pc. If you don’t have an account you can create a free account in iTunes.
14. Now you can copy any cracked game/ file and check if it’s working. If it’s not then go through the above process again to verify if it’s done properly.

Free Appstore Apps
Since you now have your ipod or iphone jailbroken, your probably wondering how to get those free apps I promised you.
1. Open Cydia on your ipod or iphone.
2. Tap the manage tab.
3. Tap sources.
4. Tap edit in the right hand corner, then tap the '+' sign in the left hand corner.
5. Type http://cydia.hackulo.us/
6. Once it is located in the sources, Tap it and install Installous.
7. Once installed go to your home screen and tap Installous.
8. It should open up a website called appulo.us
Now you can search for free apps or browse by category and download them directly to your ipod or iphone.

Jailbreak Iphone 3G and 2G
You can also jailbreak the Iphone 3G and 2G with QuickPWN using the method used in the post below on jailbreaking the Ipod touch.
Jailbreak Ipod Touch 1g

Jailbreak your ipod touch 2G
This is a tutorial to jailbreak your Ipod Touch 2nd Gen.
This is an untethered jailbreak, meaning you don't have to use your computer to boot your Ipod.
1. Download Quick Freedom here. Install it and open it. (this is the only software needed to jailbreak your Ipod)
2. If you do not see a green and white checkmark next to 'LIBUSB - Installed', click the 'Install LIBUSB' button.
During this installation all your devices that use USB ports will go crazy, this is normal. Just wait until it's finished. You can uninstall LIBUSB after the jailbreak is finished.
3. After you see a green and white checkmark next to LIBUSB and Original 2.2.1 Firmware, click Next. If you still do not see a green and white checkmark next to 'LIBUSB - Installed' after you have installed it, click Main Menu and then click Jailbreak, this should update the form and show a green and white checkmark.
4. Make sure Installer is checked, if you want a custom boot logo, check 'Use Custom Boot Logo' and click 'Change'.
Choose the image that best suits you and click OK.
5. After step 4, click 'Create Firmware'. This takes roughly 5-10 minutes. After it is finished, it will be saved to your desktop as 'Custom Firmware' and notify you via a message box. Click Next when this happens.
6. After clicking next, you're ready to pre-jailbreak it. Place your iPod Touch in DFU mode. It doesn't matter if the iPod is on or off. To do this, hold the Power and Home buttons down for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, release the Power button and continue holding the Home button for 8 more seconds until you hear your computer beep.
7. After you're in DFU mode, the screen will turn black on your ipod and QuickFreedom will notify you that your iPod is in DFU mode. Follow the instruction and click Start Pre-Jailbreak.
8. Your iPod touch screen will turn white as it's preparing for a Jailbreak. After this is finished, iTunes should be up and visible.
Hold SHIFT and click Restore (in iTunes), this allows you to choose which firmware you want to install. We'll be using the Custom Firmware.ISWF that we created in step 5 (located on your desktop). iTunes will extract the ISPW firmware file and install as if you were doing just a normal Restore.
After the firmware installation is finished...
You should now have Cydia and Installer on your 2nd Generation iPod Touch. This was done on Windows Vista 32-bit and ran flawlessly the first time around.
